Today I went to the local shopping centre to pick up some food and try to find an ironing board. (Not that I’m really keen on ironing, but it is a household essential.) Normally I would get a trolley from the supermarket and run up and down the aisles. Today I made a conscious decision not to do that.
First to the deli for small goods, preserved lemons, cheese and a special grain mix for minestrone. I didn’t need all of that, but I wanted to invest in them and their business. The baker for bread. The butcher for pork and fennel sausages (with lentils for dinner tonight) and the green grocer for the rest of the ingredients for dinner. In my own small way, I wanted to support those who do not have major corporate structures behind them to finance their operations.
I wanted to say thank you to the owners of these small businesses for staying open and keeping people employed. I wanted to say thank you to the people who are putting themselves on the front line by working in public facing roles. It’s a small gesture, but I like to think that today I have made a contribution to my community.
